Village hall closed for refurbishment

Building work started in October; the work will take 12-14 weeks so look out for a grand re-opening in February!

Thursday Coffee Mornings in the Church

Some twelve years ago two regular churchgoers, April Curnow and Rita Robinson, started the Thursday Coffee Mornings which have become such a popular social event for villagers and, thanks more recently to Tracey, they have continued to be so.

As the Village Hall will be out of use for several months, probably until February next year, the PCC has decided to hold a Coffee Morning in Church on the first and third Thursday each month, starting in October ie on Thursday 6th.  I am afraid we haven't yet the facilities to provide Tracey's yummy bacon butties but she will be there with hot coffee/tea, cake and biscuits with the help of a member of the PCC.

We will ensure that the church is warm as I can't believe the hot weather will continue into October and November!

We look forward to seeing all the regulars again on 6th October in church.

Aston Abbotts Village Hall news – September 2016

Aston Abbotts Village Hall news – September 2016

Update on refurbishment

Just waiting for WREN (our major funder) to approve our budget and choice of builder, then we’ll let everyone know! Expecting to start around 17 October; the work will take 12-14 weeks so look out for a grand re-opening in February!

Clear the hall

The last bookings will be w/c Monday 19 September. We will be clearing the hall and kitchen on Sunday morning 25 September from 8.30am. The kitchen equipment, crockery, cutlery, glasses, chairs, and the best of the tables will be stored. A small number of chairs, tables and some crockery will go into the church temporarily. If any user groups have other things in the kitchen cupboards please take them away or let us know what you’d like done.

Funding

We still have a shortfall, so we are still very grateful for donations. Thank you very much to the family of Denis Knight who kindly donated half of his funeral collection to the hall. If you can help, please contact any one of us.

Vale Lottery

The top cash prize is £25,000 and every week a few people win £25 – hopefully an Aston Abbotts winner soon! We are getting a small but regular payout from our local supporters that’s really appreciated (particularly as we won’t have any lettings income while the hall is closed). If this is your thing, please buy your tickets from our page and we get 50%:

The chair test

Fete goers tested sample chairs.  Thank you all!  The green, upholstered chair took an early lead but was overtaken by the blue, wipe-clean version by the end of the afternoon. Maybe not blue though. We’ll look at more before deciding.

Village History book still available!

Aston Abbotts 1000-2000: A village history is back in print at £10 per copy, proceeds to the village hall. If you’d like one please email us or give me a ring on 681373.  Just one box left!

The Coffee Morning finishes... for now

In July the popular Thursday Coffee Morning in the Village Hall closed for the holidays and in preparation for the imminent Village Hall renovations.

The Coffee morning started around eleven years ago and in recent years it has been run by Tracy Hinds along with a rota of volunteer helpers. It is highly valued, particularly by retired and older residents who are around in the village on a Thursday morning.

We hope that the coffee morning will be restarted in the not too distant future, but in the meantime we offer our thanks to Tracy for her hard work. Tracy is pictured below dishing up her delicious bacon rolls.

MVAS Speed Sign - First report

The MVAS speed sign organised by your Parish Council was positioned in Moat Lane between 31st January 2016 to 20th March 2016. It looked first at traffic approaching the village and then at traffic leaving the village. It counts the total number of vehicles approaching the sign and flashes up the speed limit if they are exceeding 35 mph. Just over 15% of vehicles were recorded as exceeding 35 mph.

A brief report summarising the initial results has been compiled and this may be read or downloaded by clicking here.

The sign is being shared with Cheddington. At the moment it has been relocated in Wingrave Road, after which it will probably return to Cheddington for a while.

This sign produces valuable statistical information. It will be augmented soon by a Speed Watch operated by village volunteers that will record more precise information, including video-recording and logging the registrations of speeders.

Grant from Community Chest!

We’re delighted to say that we’ve been offered £14,000 from the Community Chest, a grants scheme for community projects run jointly by AVDC and VAHT (Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust). This is payable when our major funding application is confirmed (we’re hoping this will be end April).

The village hall trust’s annual general meeting – Tuesday 19 April, 8pm, Village Hall

The village hall trust’s AGM is on Tuesday 19 April.  Janet Blake, Council Member for Stewkley and Community Chest Grants Panel Member, will be joining us as a funder representative. Village residents are also very welcome. It will be a short meeting – chairman’s summary of what we’ve done over the last year, the treasurer’s report, election of officers (chair, treasurer, secretary) and 10 minutes for taking questions from the public.

If you can’t make 19 April, we’ll also be attending the Annual Parish Meeting on 13 April, so come along then if you want to hear a quick update from us and other village groups.

Happy New Year from Aston Abbotts Postbox

The Aston Abbotts Postbox is now celebrating its first year of operation. During the past year we have distributed nearly 200 notices via email and we hope that you have found them informative and useful.

The Aston Abbotts Postbox distributes notices of interest to Aston Abbotts residents and friends via email. Posts are moderated, approved and checked for spam. Currently around 2-4 emails a week are distributed.

If you have any suggestions or comments on this service then please send them in to the postbox. Comments won't be sent out to subscribers, but they will be read by the Postbox team. A few tips for getting the most out of your postbox are below.

In the meantime, the Postbox team would like to wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful 2016.

Steve, Stuart and Phil

TIPS FOR USING THE POSTBOX

To join the postbox mail list please end an email asking to be joined to :

You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the link at the bottom of each posting.

Please send submissions to the correct address : postbox@aston-abbotts.co.uk. Emails sent to personal email addresses may get delayed or missed.

When responding to messages please make sure that you respond to the email address (or phone number) given in the message. Responding directly to the Postbox just causes us extra work and delays as we have to manually forward them on to the recipient.

We don't like to send out Word documents for fear of distributing viruses. Generally the only attachments we will forward are pictures and PDF files. We realise that not everybody can convert their Word files so we will endeavour to convert them as appropriate for you, but please bear in mind this might cause a delay as it is all a manual process.

Finally - check your junk/spam folder! At least one subscriber was missing many of our emails as his email program was incorrectly seeing some postbox messages as junk mail. You may need to add our server address - postbox@emaildodo.com - as 'good' in your email settings.

Thank you.
